For the practice of birdwatching some basic equipment is required:
- Binoculars magnifies the birds to us. Many have become observers after sighting the first time a bird with good lenses. Essential on correct identification of species. The best size for this practice is 8x42 or 10x42 (where: magnification x objective lens diameter).
- The field guide is a specialized book for identifying species in the field, i.e., after sighting. Therefore has its small size. Usually includes plates with small-scale drawings of the species and their common and scientific names. As well as their distribution or where they occur and the size of each one in centimeters.
Often are necessary: a booklet with pencil, water bottle, insect repellent, sun block, hat, torch and raincoat.
The guide uses besides those mentioned: spotting scope (for greater magnification), audio recorder and / or ipod and speaker for playback (attraction technique by the voice reproduction).
The recommendations are:
- Avoid sudden movements and noise as well as the use of clothing in vibrant colors. Boots, pants and shirts with long sleeves are essential for protection against thorns, snakes and mosquitoes.
- Ethically use of the attraction technique through the reproduction of the voice. Excessive use stresses the birds. Avoid breeding areas and close approach to breeding nests.
- Staying on the trails and paths and obey the recommendations provided by your guide.
